Rampant Knights obliterate Oldham

A wonderful fluency within the backs built upon the solid foundations established by the forwards as York ran in nine tries to ensure their lead at the pinnacle of Championship One was maintained.

With only three minutes played, Ben Reynolds drifted through to release Jack Aldous with the prop’s off-load seeing Pat Smith scamper over the line and Reynolds added the first of his nine conversions.

With Reynolds prompting a willing attack throughout, Jack Lee quickly added a trademark try from acting half before James Saltonstall touched down by the flag after a quality cut-out pass from Lee.

Winger Ben Dent latched onto Pat Smith’s astute kick to score before Reynolds drifted through a now clearly dispirited Oldham defence with the scoreboard indicating a point-per-minute.

Oldham had provided little by way of attacking flair such was York’s intensity in ensuring play was constantly in the opposition territory, although Danny Langtree created space for David Cookson to score.

But, just before the break, Aldous powered over after Kris Brining had been held up short.

Any thoughts of a possible reduction in the Knights’ fervour were quickly dispelled as Pat Smith’s deft kick bounced kindly back into his arms. The stand-off touched down before linking with Reynolds and Ed Smith to complete a deserved hat-trick.

Leading by 42-points, the Knights perhaps reduced their grip on the game running in only one further try as Jack Pickets benefitted from Reynolds pass, although Oldham winger Dale Bloomfield had the last word in the dying seconds.
