Salford Red Devils' Dan Sarginson OUT of Wembley due to Covid

FORMER England international Dan Sarginson and ex-Leeds Rhinos forward Jack Ormondroyd are the Salford Red Devils players who will miss out on the chance of playing at Wembley due to Covid.

It was announced on Tuesday that the club has seen two players test positive and another two record inconclusive tests.

Co-captains Lee Mossop and Mark Flanagan were yesterday revealed as the players who saw inconclusive results but they have since been cleared to take their place in Saturday's final.

However, Sarginson, who scored the Golden Point winning try in the quarter-final against Catalans Dragons and also featured in the semi, was today named as one of those who is positive and will be missing.

Although former Featherstone Rovers prop Ormondroyd was not in contention - he has only played three times this term - the loss of in-form Sarginson is a big blow for the Red Devils.

The 27-year-old centre, who won the 2016 Grand Final with Wigan Warriors, offers both experience and strike threat and has been filling in admirably since Niall Evalds' injury.

That said, Evalds, the England Knights full-back who will join Castleford Tigers next season, has been included in the 21-man squad so could come straight back into the side to make his return at Wembley after missing the last six weeks of action.

A club statement read: "Everyone at Salford Red Devils would like to give a massive show of gratitude to Sarginson and Ormondroyd, for their tremendous contributions throughout the season, which have helped the team progress through to the Coral Challenge Cup Final.

"The Club have continued to be in close communication with the players throughout their self-isolation.

"Both have shown exceptional professionalism and support for their teammates throughout the testing process.

"All other players have returned negative results, following multiple round of testing."

Nine of Salford's 21-man squad played against Hull KR on Tuesday.

Leeds have also named their 21-man squad with no real surprises.

Alex Mellor (ribs) and Robert Lui (knee) had been nursing injuries but both are named and set to return to the side.

Jack Walker - who is not expected to feature - Adam Cuthbertson, Cameron Smith and Tom Holroyd are included having all featured against Warrington Wolves on Tuesday night.
