Symonds likes Craven Park atmosphere

SOME people do not savour the hostility that Hull KR's Craven Park can bring but, for Huddersfield Giants' Tom Symonds, it is something he quickly learned to embrace.

The Australian second-row, who joined from Manly Sea Eagles in June, featured in only his third Super League game there during a 20-19 defeat.

Huddersfield return in the Qualifiers today knowing if they fail to win again they will be doomed to the Million Pound Game to save themselves from relegation.

Symonds, 27, recalled: “The last time I played there I think I’d only been here a couple of weeks and it was definitely a crazy atmosphere.

“But I did enjoy it, to be honest. You want to be playing in grounds where there is atmosphere and a bit of noise and it’s definitely a way you know you’re playing and there’s a lot at stake.

“We know how important a game this is but I’m looking forward to it.”

The former Sydney Roosters forward maintains he remain unfazed by Huddersfield’s predicament.

“When I signed here we were well and truly in a pickle so I knew we were going to have to be fighting til the very end of the season so it’s not surprising,” he added.

“But it certainly is tough and it’s one where we’ve all had to stick together and do our best to battle, I guess, and make sure we get this result.”

Symonds, who has scored four tries in eight games since his mid-season move, returned from injury to help Huddersfield to a crucial win against Leeds Rhinos.

He had missed the 48-40 debacle at Leigh Centurions and conceded: “It was a huge turnaround from the week before and much needed as well. Mentally I think it’s what we needed to probably get us a bit of confidence and belief back in the camp to show what we’re capable of.

“If we play like that again we will give ourselves a good chance.”
