VIDEO: Brother Sam ‘didn’t do too much wrong’

Speculation is rife that Sam Burgess, the world-class forward who left South Sydney for Bath RU 12 months ago, could be heading back to league, possibly in the next 48 hours.

Burgess, 26, came under fire for his performances with England after being fast-tracked into their World Cup squad so soon after switching codes and then being part of a squad that failed to even escape the pool stages of their home tournament.

Tom Burgess, who has recently signed a new two-year deal with Souths and impressed in England’s 26-12 win over New Zealand, last night spoke out about what his elder sibling is thinking.

“Speaking truthfully he was treated a bit unfairly and that’s probably what’s pushing him away at the moment,” he said.

“It’s a big talking point, but I suppose it’s been a big tournament and people are upset at the outcome.

“Sam’s enjoyed the experience but he’s probably just a bit upset over some of the stick he’s been getting.

“He’s new to union so that’s probably why (he’s being criticised). But in my opinion, and I’m no expert, I don’t think he’s done too much wrong in the World Cup. He’s had a week to 10 days off to refresh a little bit mentally and he’ll assess his options but he’s made no decisions yet.”

Shane Richardson, who as South Sydney chief executive finalised the team’s signing of the forward from Bradford Bulls six years ago, will seek to negotiate a deal for his former club to buy the dual-code international back from Bath.
