VIDEO: '˜I had a shocker' - Jake Connor on his Hull FC home debut
With Albert Kelly suspended, the utility player started at half-back in Thursday’s poor 16-14 loss to Catalans Dragons.
However, he made a number of glaring errors and struggled to make an impact.
That said, most of his team-mates were far from their best either as Hull’s indiscipline cost them dearly, Luke Walsh slotting five penalties.
“With my own game, I had what was pretty much a shocker,” said the 22-year-old.
“I’ll go away, look back at that and that’s what training is for… to get better. I’ll work on things I need to work on.
“That performance I put up wasn’t good enough by my own standards.
“If it’s good enough to get in the team next week I’ll be excited – I’d like to get stuck into them (Huddersfield) – but if it’s not I’ll get behind the boys.”
Connor came through the ranks at Huddersfield but turned down a new deal with them to join Hull on a two-year contract.
The Challenge Cup holders stuttered badly, though, when losing against Catalans.
“We had opportunities to win that game,” said Connor, who scored a match-winning try off the bench on debut at Wakefield.
“But at key parts we just didn’t get that final pass right and penalties and errors cost us in the end.
“The way we lost wasn’t pleasing. We played dumb and not smart enough. We looked all over the place.”
Catalans were reduced to 12 men when Greg Bird was sin-binned in the first half but impatient Hull made a raft of handling errors and instead of pushing ahead actually fell 4-2 behind,
“We didn’t take opportunities when they were in front of us,” admitted Connor. “Sometimes there’s a way to play against 12 men. I don’t think we adapted to that and we let them back into the game so I think they deserved it in the end.
“A few times they stacked in the middle – and we kept going down the middle. We needed to attack edges more and the focus wasn’t there today. We didn’t perform well. We all want to apologise for what we dished up. We should do better. Hopefully we will.”
Meanwhile, Kelly will be available again for Thursday’s televised trip to Huddersfield.
