Harrogate defeat to Bradford PA hands title to Salford

Salford moved a step closer to playing in the Football League after they clinched promotion to the Vanarama National League despite a 2-1 defeat at home to Boston.

The Ammies required just a point to be crowned National League North champions but were celebrating nonetheless given second-placed Harrogate’s 3-1 loss at Bradford Park Avenue.

The club - co-owned by former Manchester United players Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt - will now be playing in the fifth tier of English football, with their Football League dream ever nearer.

Salford hit the headlines when featuring in the TV series ‘Class of 92: Out of their League’ in 2015 and the following month they participated in the FA Cup first round for the first time, beating Notts County in front of the live BBC cameras before bowing out to Hartlepool in a replay.

The owners shared a message via the club’s twitter feed with Gary Neville saying: “Champions, Salford City Football Club, three promotions in four years, unbelievable achievement.”

Butt added: “Congratulations to the players, you’ve had a tremendous season, well done” while Scholes went on to say “now let’s go to the National League!”
