Richmond 12 Doncaster Knights 40 - Packman and Holling impress in Knights win

Showing no ill-effects from their defeat by Saracens in their previous outing, Doncaster recovered strongly to claim a maximum five points at the Athletic Ground where they convincingly beat part-timers Richmond by six tries to two.

Knights’ sixth win in seven Championship games strengthens the excellent league campaign which has taken them to second place on 26 points.

Two players in particular will be highly satisfied as they contributed significantly to a powerful collective effort: winger Howard Packman and hooker Will Holling, both of whom started a Championship contest for the first time this season.

Packman scored tries on 19 and 28 minutes, completing moves deep in Richmond’s 22, and as Doncaster’s dominant forwards carried on applying sustained pressure near the line, Holling spotted an opportunity to add the fourth try and with it a bonus point on 45 minutes.

With fly-half Sam Olver putting over his third conversion in windy conditions, Doncaster led 26-0 against the London club, who were repeatedly penalised and consequently angered the referee so much that Richmond received five yellow cards, and at one period in the second half were reduced to 13 players.

Competing against a threatening pack and aggressive backs was difficult but Richmond were enterprising given a rare chance and scored two tries late in the second half by winger Max Trimble and scrum-half Callum Watson.

Doncaster finished with converted tries from replacement forwards Jack Davies and Jerry Sexton and coach Steve Boden said: “We were happy with the first half but missed opportunities in the second. We feel we left points on the field.”
