Second enough for Deakin to land title

athletics: Mark Buckingham (Holmfirth) won the final race in the Complete Runner West Yorkshire Cross Country League series at Thornes Park, Wakefield, yesterday, but runner-up Simon Deakin (Leeds City) clinched the league title for the second successive year.

It was Deakin who set the early pace and he looked well on target until the last lap when Buckingham overtook the Leeds man on a downhill stretch and went comfortably clear. Jorge Thomas (Keighley and Craven) finished in in third place.

Leeds City continued their domination of the team race with six in the top 13 places.

When the women lined up for their race Katie Walshaw (Holmfirth) had already clinched a second successive title and led from the start to win from Katie Parry (Leeds City) second and Rachael Bamford (Otley) third.

Holmfirth narrowly beat Leeds City in the team race to take the league title.
