Steelers find their ‘perfect fit’ for new campaign

SHEFFIELD STEELERS’ head coach Gerad Adams believes the arrival of Canadian forward Mathieu Roy is the “perfect fit” for the Elite League club.

The collapse of the 27-year-old forward’s move to Norwegian club Tonsberg Vikings enabled the South Yorkshire club to pounce and convince him that his future lay in the UK.

Roy has played the last five seasons for East Coast Hockey League outfit Florida Everblades, captaining them for the last three and leading them to the Kelly Cup Championship two years ago. The following year, he led the league in goals and points.

“This is a big signing for us,” said Adams. “Once we knew we had a chance of signing him we jumped in.

“It’s easy just to look at his points and be impressed, but the more you know about this guy the more you like him.

“He leads by example and he is a perfect fit for us – it certainly helps our offensive punch.

“We lost some quality guys this summer and they can only be replaced by quality people and players coming in. To sign a guy with this much experience, leadership and quality, was too good an opportunity to walk away from.”

Roy will join the Steelers for pre-season in August and play his first home game for his new club against Coventry Blaze on Saturday, August 30.
