Top gear: How Yorkshire riders took the medals at National Cycle-Cross in Bradford

Keighley’s Ian Field claimed a fifth national title as he stormed to victory in the elite men’s race in Peel Park yesterday, winning by almost a minute from defending champion Liam Killeen. Field beat Killeen in the final round of the National Trophy Series last month, and he kept that form going as he led virtually from start to finish.

After winning four in a row, Field lost his title in 2016, but was delighted to take it back in 2017.

“It’s fantastic. The first time I lost it I was gutted and I really wanted to get it back. I’ve had a fantastic season so far, and this and the Worlds were big goals for me. I’m feeling good and strong for the Worlds in three weeks.

“Bradford always gives us a great crowd and atmosphere, and living nearby makes it special too with so many friends and family cheering for me.”

In other categories, European junior champion Tom Pidcock (Oldfield-Paul Milnes Cycles) was victorious in Sunday morning’s junior race, the Leeds teenager crossing the line with enough time to spare to adopt a superman pose as he crossed the line in style.

Another Oldfield-Paul Milnes Cycles rider, 20-year-old Billy Harding from Bradford won the Under-23 men’s title by 20 seconds from Swindon rival Chris Rothwell. And Keighley’s Chris Young was crowned the over-50 veterans national champion on Saturday as he held off Pete Middleton (Zepnat RT) by just 16 seconds.

19-year-old Amira Mellor (Next Wyman) from Holmfirth took the silver medal in the women’s under-23 race, with reigning world under-23 champion Evie Richards winning by more than two minutes.

And Sheffield’s Maddi Smith (Bolsover and District CC) won the veteran women’s title on Saturday to add to Yorkshire’s great performance.
