TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY: Torres and Carroll break records

Torres jetted to Stamford Bridge to complete his deal and Roman Abramovich further signalled his intention to turn Chelsea back into a dominant force by agreeing to pay in the region of 21million for Benfica's David Luiz.

At the same time, Carroll travelled to Liverpool's training ground to put the finishing touches to his 35million move to join Luis Suarez, whose own move from Ajax was also officially completed tonight.

Torres had sparked the transfer rush on Friday when he handed in a written transfer request after Chelsea had an initial offer of 35million turned down by the Reds.

Liverpool changed their minds after Chelsea increased their offer - but only after making sure they had landed Newcastle striker Carroll, who handed in a transfer request of his own this week.

As the minutes ticked down to the 11pm deadline, Newcastle saw two frantic bids to bring their former player Charles N'Zogbia back from Wigan rejected by the Latics.

Newcastle did however confirm they had signed Stephen Ireland on loan from Aston Villa.

Meanwhile Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam, expected to seal a move to Anfield, was the subject of a last-ditch offer from Tottenham which came too late. Blackpool, meanwhile, brought three players in on loan - James Beattie from Rangers, Jason Puncheon from Southampton and Sergei Kornilenko from Zenit St Petersburg - and signed Andy Reid from Sunderland.

On a busy day at Anfield, Paul Konchesky was allowed to join Nottingham Forest on loan and Daniel Ayala went to Derby, while the Reds brought in 17-year-old Coventry midfielder Conor Thomas.

Former Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins joined Birmingham on loan from Russian club Rubin Kazan, while Aston Villa confirmed the loan signing of American international Michael Bradley from Borussia Monchengladbach.

Blackburn signed Argentinian midfielder Mauro Formica on a three-year deal and also Barcelona youngster Ruben Rochina for an undisclosed fee. Rovers forward El-Hadji Diouf was in Scotland where he completed a loan move to Rangers.

Bolton landed Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea on loan, while Fulham completed the short-term signing of former Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen from Stoke, who also sold Tuncay to Wolfsburg on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Sunderland's out-of-favour defender Paulo Da Silva completed his switch to Real Zaragoza for an undisclosed fee while Wolves signed Bristol City goalkeeper Adriano Basso and Andy Keogh moved in the opposite direction.

Hull signed 19-year-old Manchester United striker Cameron Stewart for an undisclosed fee following a successful loan spell, while Leeds signed Manchester City reserve goalkeeper David Gonzalez.

Until their late bid for Adam, it was a quiet day at Tottenham, whose bid for Phil Neville was rejected out of hand by Everton, while Giovani dos Santos went to Racing Santander on loan until the end of the season.

David Moyes brought Greek teenager Apostolos Vellios to Goodison Park while Arsene Wenger agreed to let youngster Kyle Bartley join Rangers on a short-term loan deal and signed 18-year-old Japanese forward Ryo Miyaichi.

Wigan, having resisted Newcastle's late swoop for N'Zogbia, got involved at the last minute as they sealed the signing of striker Conor Sammon on a three-and-a-half-year deal from Kilmarnock.
