Trophy will provide Carnegie yardstick

Leeds Carnegie play the biggest game in their history tonight when they welcome established British Basketball League side Glasgow Rocks in the first round of the BBL Trophy.

A record crowd of 750 is expected at the Carnegie Sports Arena in Headingley for a fixture that will prove a significant yardstick for the West Yorkshire programme, which has been accepted into the BBL for next year.

The programme has been run from the university since 2006. After climbing the national ranks, Carnegie have been identified by the sport’s governing body as being worthy of a place in the elite tier of the sport.

Traditionally a university team, Carnegie will from next season operate as a BBL franchise independent of Leeds Metropolitan University.

As one of the more progressive outfits in the National League structure – one they have been climbing for the past eight years – they have been invited to make up the numbers in the BBL Trophy this season.

Tip-off is at 7.30pm.
