Wood and Fletcher spark Ionians win

national two north: Title-chasers Hull Ionians continued their recent good form with a 
41-21 victory at Sheffield Tigers.

The East Yorkshire side did much of the damage in the first half and at the break led 34-7 with a hat-trick of tries from flanker Kerry Wood by the 33rd minute, two from centre Richard Fletcher and one to second row Joe Makin.

Fletcher completed a personal treble by the hour mark while the Tigers’ try-scorers were centre Jamie Broadley, with a brace, and replacement scrum-half Josh Bird.

Hull also secured an impressive away win, 38-27 at Bromsgrove.

But it took a fantastic second-half fightback to secure the points after they trailed 22-5 at the break.

Jared Williams scored Hull’s first-half try just before the break and fellow wing forward Anthony Maka scored on 44, 47 and 51 minutes for a quickfire hat-trick.

James Cameron converted twice to make it 24-22 to Hull and scrum-half Dan White extended their lead on 62 minutes, Cameron converting.

Bromsgrove pulled a try back on 75 minutes, but Hull had the last word with full-back James Wigglesworth scoring and Cameron converting.

Otley provided ample excitement in their final home game, scoring 14 tries in the 59-31 defeat of Dudley Kingswinford.

James Twomey scored four to take Mark Kirkby’s club league record and there were two for Ben Steele on his 200th appearance. Ben Cooper provided some sublime kicking, notching seven conversions, mostly from near touch.

Huddersfield ran in three tries in a 57-19 defeat at Caldy which proved to be Dan Hyde’s last game in charge.

The first team player-coach came through the ranks at Lockwood Park and played for the first team as well as West Hartlepool and Leeds Tykes. He was also part of the England 2002 Churchill Cup squad and faced the Barbarians in 2004.

He will join Yorkshire Two outfit Leodiensians next season.
