Yorkshire golf: Charlie Daughtrey and Barclay Brown bolster England Under-16s' fightback

England were able to return from Madrid with their heads held high after the annual mixed international, taking the honours 7-5 in the second series of singles and foursomes.

Spain’s youngsters had got off to a fast start and at the end of the first day’s play at Spain's National Golf Centre were leading 9.5-2.5 after the four foursomes and eight singles.

But England refused to throw in the towel, Daughtrey and Brown playing their part with a 3&2 foursomes victory in the morning.

Spain triumphed 14.5-9.5 overall, but Bennett said: “What an amazing day’s golf from a truly inspirational team.

“I’m so proud of them for the way they came back. They could so easily have gone out there and thought they had lost. They all showed a lot of grit and determination and it was superb.

“They really did play super golf and they should all be proud of themselves.”

The players showed their commitment by arriving on the practice range before the green staff on day two – and their preparation served them well.

The England players shared the morning foursomes 2-2 and the team picked up the momentum in the afternoon with five wins in the eight singles, Daughtrey winning again in the afternoon.

The first day’s play was close, despite the score, with 10 of the matches ending on the 16th or later, but the Spanish team proved the stronger finishers.

“All credit to Spain,” added Bennett, after the first day’s play. “But England played well in a series of tough, close matches.

“Also, to put it in perspective, we had a very young team – overall they were much younger than the Spanish – and we were playing at Spain’s national training centre. Three of their players were members and knew the course inside out and back to front.”

Victory on Birley Wood's President's Day went to John Shemeld (87-19-68) on count back from Julian Madden (76-8-68), who had the consolation of shooting the best gross score.

Oakdale's seniors nine-hole competition produced a three-way tie on 17 points, Malcolm Laycock taking victory.

Hornsea's Phil Cross won the East Riding Union's seniors' championship, played at Boothferry.

He tied with Ian Stephenson (Ganton), three times a winner in the last four years, on 78 and won a two-hole play-off thanks to a birdie at the first extra hole.

Knaresborough staged the HarPanOak 36-hole event, Johnny O'Mara triumphing with a net 141 (69 + 72).

Second on 142 was Lee Pedel with a pair of 71s, followed by Thomas Birtwhistle (68 74).

Mark Foster won Knaresborough's Pro Stableford with 42pts, three ahead of Fred Hicks and five in front of Phil Hudson.

Meltham's Millennium Trophy was won by Raymond Bottomley with 42pts, one better than runner-up BJ Ellis, with Bradley Whitwam (40) third.

Colin Gemmell won Wetherby's Open medal thanks to a net 70, on count back from Les Hill.

Bracken Ghyll's Winter Pairs champions are Chris Page and Seb Tempest.

Their men's Crawford Bowl competition was won by David Burn with 42pts, one better than John Taylor.

The Bradford GC's Morrell Rosebowl was won convincingly by Susan Asquith with a 145 aggregate (74 71), four clear of Sara Horsman (74 75) and five ahead of Carolyn Tate (75 75).

Lindsay Sutherland headed the 16 Phillip Cup qualifiers, carding 85-18-67, with Stanley Leach second with 85-17-68.

Penny Clark and Jude Musgrave got off to a winning start in defence of their evening league foursomes title, beating a Bracken Ghyll pairing 5&3 at home.

Branshawwon the Bradford Union's team championship qualifier by five shots, through the efforts of Joseph Copperwaite (72 72), Ben Gill (75 75), James Marshall (82 82) and Sam Reeve (81 81).

The Manor were second with their team of David Wilby (75 75), Sam Hardaker (77 77), Chris Sugden (79 79) and Adam Drewery (84 84).
