Yorkshire golf - club news: Halifax West End record taken to a new low

HALIFAX West End GC have seen their Texas Scramble record lowered to a new mark of 48.8 net.

The Golden Texas Scramble signalled the start of the season at the club and the popular event attracted a field of more than 130 players in teams of four.

Despite the poor recent weather conditions, the course played extremely well as the exceptionally low scoring underlined.

John Healy, Tony Morris, Mark Denham and Mark Rozsa returned the fantastic score of 48.8, eclipsing the previous record of 49.6 set a few weeks earlier.

Second place went to Steve Blanchard, Paul Hardcastle, Les Carman and Chris Hall (51.65) while Nick Hulme, Rob Culledge, John Stevens and John Clay placed third (52.2).

The club were proud to present three more members with their 50 years continuous membership mementoes. The trio concerned were Roger Depledge, Alex Whyte and Michael Berry.

West Bradford GC's Heidi Biggs defied wet and very windy conditions to win Division One of the Lady Captain's Cup, the first qualifying competition, with a net 76 off 17.

Fourteen-handicapper Gillian Ludkiewicz was second (95-14-81) and third was 20-handicapper Jenny Chapman (103-20-83).

Division Two winner was Sheila Terry (104-26-78), who finished four shots clear of Hilary Wall (103-21-82). Third place went to Eileen Dovenor (103-21-82), who played alongside Division One winner Biggs.

Division Three honours were taken by Sandra Vine-Jenkins (115-31-84), who bested Carol Craven (121-36-85) by one shot. In third place was Joan Reeder (124-34-90).

Ewan Bromley has driven in as this year's junior captain at Wakefield GC.

Fourteen-year-old Bromley has further cause to celebrate as he has been chosen to play for Yorkshire at Under-16 level.

Pontefract and District GC's Thursday junior coaching sessions resume tomorrow (April 7).

They will be held every Thursday from 4.30pm-5.15pm and are open to youngsters aged 5-15. Equipment is provided and the cost is £5 per child per session.

Sessions also take place every Saturday at noon (age 10 and under) and 1.15pm (ages 11 and older)

The Junior Golf Passport is a coaching programme designed to take a child on the journey from total beginner to becoming a golfer with the skills and etiquette required to play on any golf course. Junior membership is available at Pontefract and District for £68 per year.
