Mellor had gone into the round leading by three points and was paired, by coincidence, with his closest rival Andy Oates, who needed a top-four placing to stand a chance of overall victory.

Oates was unable to improve on his lowest counting score of six after finishing ninth and although Mellor placed 12th he was assured of the competition title.

Alan Grant took first place on the day with 40 points, while Craig McMinn leapfrogged Oates to take second place overall.

Seven pairs qualified for the Saturday afternoon play-off, when leading duo Derek Oldham and John Kirkwood proved unable to continue their good form.

They returned 34pts as the field was blown away by David Raper and Richard Smith, who despite poor weather conditions carded a fantastic score of 40 to win by a five-point margin.

Martin Talbot and Andy Veevers placed second on count back from Robin Peters and Ian Marsland.

A fourball Stableford for those who did not qualify for the play-offs was won by Steve Cochrane and Ken Todd with 42pts, six ahead of Ken Helliwell and Steve Holmes.

In the Sunday competition, Graham Thornton had an unassailable lead over Les Carman, who held on to take second place ahead of Warren Parker.
