Yorkshire golf: Crosland Heath's Oliver Caton enjoys home victory in HHJOM's first 2016 event

CROSLAND HEATH'S Oliver Caton took the gross prize on his home course as the 2016 Huddersfield Halifax Junior Order of Merit got underway.

Caton shot an 81 and leads West End's Freddy Nicholson at the head of the embryonic Order of Merit standings.

Nicholson won the net competition on the day with a 67, two shots ahead of Meltham's James Bailey, whose better back nine score left Crosland Heath's George Hanson, who also shot 69, in third place.

Nearest the pin in two on the 10th hole was Aiden Grant (Dewsbury) while nearest the pin on the 17th was Joe Hainsworth (Outlane).

Bradley Park's Gabriella Child won the non-CONGU Stableford competition with 25pts after a count back on the last three holes from her club-mate Michael Edwards. Outlane's Josh Robinson (22pts) was third.

Fifty four players took part on the day, 36 in the strokeplay competition and 18 for the non-CONGU 10-hole event, among them Outlane's Alistair Church who was playing his first competition.

The next event will be held at Lightcliffe on Sunday, June 19.
