Both sections were closely contested in difficult conditions, with Evans and eight-handicapper Campbell again coming out on top in the pro-am category, as they had at Outlane GC back in September.

Their 39pt tally saw them edge James Fish and Tom Hunt (two handicap), of Meltham GC, by a point.

In the am-am, Todmorden's David Stafford (three) and Warren Duckworth (13) carded 37pts, which placed them one ahead of West End GC's James Dix (three) and Graham Brazier (12), and Donald Harrison (14) and Andy Bemrose (14), of Bradley Park GC.

As is usual at nine-hole venues, the alliance field was split into morning and afternoon sections - with distinctly differing results.

The morning players started in light rain on a very wet course with the wind gradually increasing to three-club strength.

Bradley Park professional Josh Lester and Crosland Heath one-handicapper Luke Pilkington, who were first out, returned a remarkable score of 37pts and the am-am pairing of Graham Thornton (20) and Mike Clegg (17), of West End, 35.

In the afternoon, under brightening skies with no rain and a dissipating wind, scoring was much better on the course as it dried, with an average of 33pts compared to the morning average of 28.

Elland's Stan Gledhill had a fright on the first green when, as he stood over his putt, another ball suddenly plugged within a foot of his. The shot had been struck from the first tee, 335 yards away, by Huddersfield GC assistant Jack Pearcey.

The next Alliance is the individual stoke play competitions for the Page Trophy and the Roger Heap Cup at West End on Tuesday, April 19, which will be followed by the AGM when some planned rule changes will be discussed.

Kirkbymoorside GC ladies, who had knocked out champions Malton & Norton GC in the previous round, have made it into round four of the Mail on Sunday National Club Classic.

Team captain Sue Clements had been required to beat former Yorkshire champion Emma Brown in a sudden-death play-off against Malton & Norton after the match finished in a 2.5-2.5 tie.

Her side did not require her to go to extra holes this time as Hornsea were defeated 3.5-1.5.
