Yorkshire golf: Hallamshire feel the Fourth after Alex Fitzpatrick goes low at Teesside

HALLAMSHIRE took victory in the Yorkshire Fourth Division team championship thanks to an outstanding four-under-par first round from Alex Fitzpatrick.

Backed up by Julian Wood and Jim Tasker, the South Yorkshire club claimed the crown, but only by two shots from Cleveland, represented by Jason Jones, Neil Russell and Sam Millington.

The teams had been level at the halfway mark on 219, Hallamshire complementing England Under-16 international Fitzpatrick's 68 with rounds of 75 from Tasker and 76 from Wood.

Millington led the way for Cleveland in the morning with a 70, Jones shooting 74 and Russell 75.

Knaresborough, Scarcroft and Hornsea were five shots adrift of the pacemakers with Alwoodley one back of them.

Fitzpatrick, whose brother Matt won the Nordea Masters title on Sunday on the European Tour to add to his British Masters victory, drifted to a 78 in the afternoon, but Tasker (75) and Wood (76) ensured a winning total of 448 was handed in.

Russell headed Cleveland's afternoon's work with a 73, Jones carding 76 and Millington an 82.

Alwoodley (Will Shucksmith, 71 73; Tom Irwin, 73 81; Chris Gray, 81 74) climbed into third place on 453, one better than Knaresborough (Lee Pedel, 74 74; Jason Taylor, 76 76; Ivor Roy, 74 80).

Also promoted to compete in the Third Division championship at Silkstone on Wednesday, June 29 were Crosland Heath and Hornsea.

Relegated back to the Fifth Division for next year were Halifax, Bawtry, Pontefract & District, Saltburn by the Sea, Halifax West End and Halifax Bradley Hall, the latter four shots adrift of safety.
