Yorkshire golf: Huddersfield's Josh Morton adds Woodthorpe win to Earl of Dartmouth triumph

His victory lifted him up to eighth in the Yorkshire Order of Merit standings, in which Cookridge Hall's Tom Broxup stretched his lead at the top with fifth place behind Morton.

Rotherham's Dominic Moon, a former Sheffield Plate winner, was the halfway leader after a level-par 72 and was one of Morton's playing partners.

It gave the 19-year-old Fixby player the chance to gauge his second-round progress and he put together a 72 of his own in testing conditions for a 149 aggregate.

Second place on the day went to Moortown's Ben Firth, (76 78), runner-up in the 2015 overall standings, sponsored by Eagle Golf. Rotherham's Jamie Harrison (75 80) was third and Moon (72 83) fourth.

"I know that Dominic is a really good golfer," said Morton. "He has won a few competitions and he got to plus one with his round in the morning.

"I knew from the way our scores were going that I might be in contention, but I wasn't sure about winning."

Two birdies in Morton's first round were overwhelmed by five bogeys and one double bogey, but in the second round he balanced three bogeys with three birdies.

He was level par at the turn after a birdie at eight was negated immediately at the next. He reversed the process, birdieing 12 after dropping a shot at 11, and then recovered the shot that slipped away at 14 with a birdie at 16.

"I was just sat in the clubhouse, watching groups come in and checking the scores every now and then," he said. "It was a bit nerve-wracking."

It was his second Yorkshire Order of Merit victory, following on from his Earl of Dartmouth triumph at Woodsome Hall last year.

He hopes to be able to defend that trophy, and also plans to play in the Whitley Cup at Dewsbury and the Sheffield Plate at Hallamshire later this month, as well as the Yorkshire amateur championship at Moortown in August.
