Yorkshire golf: Laurie Ryder and Alan T Smith build early foundations for alliance win at Bracken Ghyll GC

WOODHALL HILLS GC'S Laurie Ryder and Alan T Smith edged victory in a close Bradford Alliance at Bracken Ghyll GC thanks to a blistering start.

Twelve-handicapper Ryder was one under par gross through eight holes, which enabled the duo to open with four birdies in the first five holes. They then added four more on the spin from the seventh.

Smith, who plays off 14, took over after Ryder's breathtaking beginning, coming in on four of the next five holes, before his partner produced more superb golf to close the round.

Ryder played the last five holes in just one over par as the pair totalled 45pts for the day.

Four teams finished on 44pts, Baildon professional Richard Masters and 12-handicapper Trevor Oliver taking second place on countback.

Masters was two under par after five holes before Oliver made his mark on six consecutive holes with three pars and three net birdies.

He also scored a birdie two at the 138-yard par-3 13th before Masters added two more three-pointers with consecutive birdies at holes 16 and 17.

Third place went to Richard Buck (Baildon GC) and Angelo Gordon (Marriott Hollins Hall GC) while best-placed host pairing were Steve Pelkowski and Ashley Weir on 42..
