Yorkshire golf: Moortown's Tom Gray wins county boys' title at Fulford

A FIRST-round 69 laid the foundations for Moortown's Tom Gray to win the Yorkshire Boys' Championship at Fulford.

Gray added a 76 for a 145-aggregate and a two-shot win from Wakefield's Dan Bradbury (74 73).

England Under-16 international Charlie Daughtrey (Rotherham) finished third on 149 (76 73).

Gray was following in the recent footsteps of Masters champion Danny Willett, the 2005 champion, British Masters winner Matt Fitzpatrick (2011), former Vivendi Cup champion John Parry (2004) and 2014 English men’s amateur champion Nick Marsh (2012).

Moor Allerton's Johnny Lawrence finishing as the highest-placed Yorkshire competitor after the first round of the English Senior Men's Open Championship at Kirby Muxloe and Rothley Park.

Lawrence shot a 71 at Rothley Park to share fourth place, four shots behind former champion Richard Latham (Woodhall Spa), whose 67 came at Kirby Muxloe.

The Moor Allerton member sandwiched bogeys at holes eight and nine with birdies at the fourth and 10th to be round in level par.
