Yorkshire golf - seniors: Art Severn shines in the sun to win Harrogate Union's seniors title

Early starters had encountered cold and blustery conditions, but once the sun came out scoring improved throughout the field.

John Webster, the Seniors match play champion, set the mark with a net Stableford score of 39pts.

It put him three in front of the field at one stage , and seven ahead in the scratch competition.

However, he found himself overtaken on count back, firstly by David Spenley and then by John Bradley, who would eventually finish in second and third place respectively.

Spenley's was a roller-coaster performance, including two birdies at short holes but also three blobs on his card.

The union is used to late drama and so it proved as Severn accumulated a superb 23pts on the back nine for a total of 40, earning him the coveted Otley Trophy.

Early leader Webster's consolation was victory in the Seniors Championship Trophy, four points ahead of Ian Smith, the 2015 Union President.

In the age categories, Roger Benson scored 33 in the 75+ group , and three Pannal golfers won prizes, including the competition host and vice captain Nick Rusling.

Age Groups - 55-59: 35 G Horn (Oakdale); 33 M Wilding (Oakdale).

60-64: 37 L Meaney (Masham), 36 B Doherty (Knaresborough).

65-69: 36 J Clayburn (Thirsk & Northallerton), N Rusling (Pannal).

70-74: 33 D Walmsley (Pannal), 29 M Frayne (Harrogate).

Lawrence Batley Seniors League

A hugely competitive week in the Lawrence Batley Seniors League saw only two teams failing to secure at least two points.

Woodsome Hall maintained the pace at the top of Section A despite being held 4-4 at Bradford Moor.

Marsden secured an impressive 7-1 home victory over Halifax while 5-3 away wins for Crosland Heath and West Bradford -at Calverley and South Bradford respectively - kept them in second and third spots in the section.

Crow Nest Park’s 5-3 home victory over Elland keeps them top of Section B.

Strong home performances from Hebden Bridge and Silkstone, 6-2 over utland and Todmorden respectively, were accompanied by yet another draw for West End, this time away to Branshaw.

There were three drawn matches in Section C including the re-arranged fixture between Werneth and Hanging Heaton.

The latter drew again against Dewsbury District, but maintained their position at the head of the section.

Ryburn moved up the table to third with a 6-2 home win over Saddleworth, while Bradley Park enjoyed their best result of the season, a 6-2 home victory over Werneth.

In Section D, Low Laithes again showed strong home form, beating Lightcliffe 7-1, although arguably the most creditable result of the day was Huddersfield’s 6-2 victory at Bradley Hall.

A 30ft winning putt on the 18th In the top fourball contributed to the scoreline.

Home wins for Queensbury (5-3 against South Leeds) and Blackley (5-3 against Wortley) completed the fixtures.

Low Laithes have a lead of five with the next five teams all within five points of one another.
