Yorkshire golf: Steve Watson wins Knaresborough quartet's battle to be first to a century

Centenary co-ordinator David Lund, captain Graham Oxley, membership chairman Nick Woods and Steve Watson agreed to play until at least two members of the group had totalled 100 Stableford points.

The last putt sunk on their 54th hole saw Watson become the first to reach the century. Captain Oxley followed suit a couple of holes later.

Knaresborough had held a competition for members to "guesstimate" how many holes would be required and the winner was Nigel Saville.

Captain's Day at Birley Wood proved a family affair for the second consecutive year

David Kean won on his father Norman's special day with 43pts. The same thing happened last year with the 2015 captain and his son.

Elizabeth Allender, the only woman competing, won the ladies' section with 32, but it should be noted it was a score that would have beaten half the men's section.

Jamie Hatcher triumphed in the junior section with 44.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Mark Hodson (at the 5th), Don Dye (at the 7th), K Christian (at the 12th) and Chris Tingle (at the 14th).

Wetherby's seniors' open day was won with a 49pt total by Peter Marsh and P Robinson (Forest Park).

One adrift and runners-up were Silkstone's Howard Swift and Michael Oates, a point back, while Malcolm Ellis and Keith Strutt took third place from Mid Yorkshire's Shaun Gray and Terry O’Malley on count back with 47pts.

All three accuracy prizes were won with the measurements coming down to inches.

Nearest the line at the 14th was Pete Orvis (Hessle), a mere three and a half inches away, D Harker (Silkstone) was just two and a quarter inches away with his tee shot at the third, a quarter of an inch shorter than the winning distance of George Nixon (Hartlepool), at the 11th.
