M62 closures planned as major six-month bridge upgrade gets underway

The M62 will shut in both directions as work begins later this month to upgrade Scammonden Bridge in Calderdale.

The B6114 over what is known to locals as ‘Rainbow Bridge’ or ‘Brown Cow Bridge’, will fully close for the six months the work takes place.

National Highways said this is because the bridge is too thin for a lane closure, which wouldn’t allow space for a safe working area.

Work on the bridge will begin April 20 and continue to October, with three M62 closures also due to happen in May, June and August.

The affected junctions are 22 at Rockingstone Moss, 23 at Outlane and 24 at Ainley Top.

Closures will take place overnight from 8pm to 6am Monday to Friday, with diversions along the A672, A58, A646 and A649.

Work will replace the existing aluminum parapet on the bridge with a new steel parapet, which National Highways said is vital to the long term safety and integrity of the structure.
