Music clubs continue play an important and vibrant part of the classic music scene, many dating back to the beginning of the last century, their annual seasons still attracting the famous names of our time.

This year the Huddersfield Society is celebrating its centenary with a most attractive programme at St Paul’s Hall, opening with the pianist Angela Hewitt playing four works by Bach (October 16).

It also brings a legendary Czech ensemble, the Prazak Quartet, who play works by Smetana, Janacek and Dvorak (April 23), and two concerts featuring the Sheffield-born pianist, Benjamin Frith, first as a member of the Gould Piano Trio (December 4), and in duet with the famous American pianist, Andrew Brownell (March 12).

The young Sacconi Quartet (who feature in today’s Album Reviews), perform Suk, Debussy and Beethoven (February 12), having already appeared as part of the British Music Society in York’s Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall (December 1). That season opens with an incredibly gifted young New Zealand violinist, Benjamin Baker, who has received the cherished first prize in New York’s Young Concert Artists International Audition. Partnered by the pianist Daniel Lebhardt in an evening of violin sonatas by Beethoven, Ysaye and Richard Strauss (September 29). Two finalists in the Leeds International Piano Competition, Noriko Ogawa (November 10), and Vitaly Pisarenko (March 16), are also included in the six concerts.
