Kaiser Chiefs at First Direct Arena: Leeds band on new song How 2 Dance and Kylie's outfit changes

Leeds band Kaiser Chiefs are almost two decades in the game, armed with an extensive back-catalogue of stadium belters.

Now they return with their brand new single, How 2 Dance, the first from their forthcoming new album.

Fans can hear it live on Saturday, when the five-piece plays a homecoming gig at the First Direct Arena, where they will be supported by The Fratellis and The Sherlocks.

“We really wanted to make a song that put together all the things we were trying to get right over the last three records,” frontman Ricky Wilson says new track, produced by Amir Amor, formerly in drum and bass band Rudimental.

“For the first time in a long time we have teamed up with the two guys who originally signed us to B Unique,” says Wilson. “They’ve watched us grow, seen our ups and downs, and in many ways understand us better than we do.”

Recently the band have reeled off a host of noteworthy live-performances, including the Invictus Games opening ceremony, headlining Virgin Radio’s One Big Thank You show for key workers, and a televised performance for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations on ITV.

After 2019’s album Duck, Wilson, guitar player Andrew “Whitey” White (guitar), bassist Simon Rix , keyboardist Peanut and drummer Vijay Mistry come together in the hope of creating a solid set of floor-fillers.

“I hope to hear it at weddings, on the radio, and in the last remaining indie discos across the land,” Wilson says.

“It’s about letting go, not worrying about what other people think you should be doing. It may not be the smoothest of journeys, but sometimes you need a bit of turbulence to remind you that you are flying.”

Speaking about the tour, he says: “I can remember once, we played at a little place in Manchester - before Education, Education, Education

and War came out – and we hadn’t done a show in a while and I can remember being in the bathroom, looking in the mirror and thinking to myself ‘Is it gonna happen? Is it still in there? Is it still, like, in my ability to do this?’ And then you walk out on stage and it all comes back to you.”

Asked about outfits for the live show, Wilson says: “The thing is, we are a band, and we’re supposed to act like we don’t really care. But then you go and see someone like Kylie, who has like 15 outfit changes, and to be honest – I’m a little bit jealous! Literally outfit-wise, you have one shot for us! However, the moment that Vijay wears shorts and short fingerless gloves, and I have an outfit change, is when it’s gone too far.”
