Celebrating a magnificent autumn of culture in Yorkshire, the Kirklees Year of Music weekend of film and music line up has been unveiled.

Events take place at Dewsbury Town hall on October 6 and 7, with two nights showcasing the very best in film and live music. The weekend has been produced by Huddersfield-based Live Cinema UK in partnership with Kirklees Year of Music.

Two of the top musicians who currently work in live cinema – where films are accompanied by live music performances – will be entertaining the crowds in one-night-only events you won’t want to miss.

Multi-award winning composer Anna Meredith presents her live soundtrack to Eighth Grade, its first performance since the world premiere at London’s Barbican in 2022. And DJ Yoda returns to Kirklees for the first time since headlining Huddersfield Festival of Light 2014 with audience of 9000.

Tickets for Anna’s soundtrack to comedian and YouTuber Bo Burnham’s Eight Grade on Friday, October 6, includes a Q and A with the composer, and cost £10 (£7 concessions). Book here. Pitchfork called her “one of the most innovative minds in modern British music”, and the story navigates awkward teen life and YouTube ambitions, with an incredible electro-synth and pulsing drumbeat sound. A live four-piece band will make this a simply mesmerising and unforgettable show.

The multi-talented award-winning audio-visual turntablist DJ Yoda’s Tarantino AV show is on Saturday, October 7, tickets also £10 (£7). Book here. DJ Yoda will give an entirely new spin to iconic Quentin Tarantino’s work in Kirklees, after a run at the Edinburgh Fringe.

Speaking about his return to Kirklees, DJ Yoda says: “I have such great memories of playing the Festival of Light in Huddersfield way back in 2014 – I can’t wait to come back to Kirklees and perform my Tarantino Audio-Visual show!”

Lisa Brook, Artistic Director of Live Cinema UK adds: “Live Cinema UK presents film events around the world but we’re still a Kirklees-based company. Being born and bred in Kirklees, I’m so proud to be bringing two of the very best examples of live cinema events to our home district. If you’ve never experienced a film with live performance before, what a way to start: Anna Meredith’s incredible score to the hilarious Bo Burnham’s first feature is just joyous, and bringing DJ Yoda back to Kirklees after he headlined the Festival of Light in 2014 with a new show based on the iconic Tarantino. People still tell me about how much they loved Yoda’s 2014 Sci Fi Movies show, which was one of our first ever events as a company, so we are beyond excited to be bringing him back to Kirklees.”

Tickets are on sale now via Kirklees Town Halls for £10/£7 concessions per event. You can buy a special weekender pass for £16.

There’s plenty to look forward to beyond the October events, including a very Yorkshire adaptation of Beowulf, the tale of warriors, monsters and dragons in Huddersfield, from November 8 to November 11. If you like Game of Thrones this will be your kind of adventure.
