Draconid Meteor Shower: Yorkshire Dales among UK’s top spots to watch spectacle

Stargazers are in for a treat this week as the Draconid meteor shower has been taking to the skies and is due to be visible until Thursday 10th October.

What's more, this shower was at its viewing peak last night and will be again tonight.

For those keen to know where the best places to watch this dazzling spectacle is, the team at Jessops has revealed that Yorkshire Dales has been placed in top 5 spots in the UK to view the shower.

Jessops has compiled a list of the UK’s dark sky reserves and then ranked the top 10 based on the number of stargazing events, viewing locations across the region and nearby accommodation.

Following just behind North York Moors is Yorkshire Dales in fifth place.

Yorkshire Dales National Park is the largest Dark Sky Reserve in the UK. To qualify as a Dark Sky Reserve, an area must ensure at least 67% of its properties are dark sky friendly. Impressively, 90% of residential properties in the Yorkshire Dales already met this criteria when it was designated in 2020.

There are 17 places to stay, making it perfect for a weekend getaway. Plus, there are five observation points where you can spot the Milky Way, meteor showers, and even the Northern Lights!
