New bakery and gift shop at Worsbrough Mill

Worsbrough Mill has risen to the challenge after a growing demand for water milled flour and bread – it’s opened a micro bakery.

A new gift shop and visitor space are amongst other developments at the 17th Century working water mill museum which is set in 240 acres of tranquil country park in Barnsley.

Worsbrough Mill, where history comes to life for all the family, is powered using water from the River Dove to produce a range of premium quality organic flours and associated products, for visitors and trade.

Earlier this year the Mill received a grant from the Culture Recovery Fund which has made possible the new developments.

A new micro bakery will enable the mill to regularly sell bread made from flour milled on the site.

The very popular on-site café has also been extended to enable more visitors to sit inside.

Money was also used to create a new visitor space and shop, plus a new volunteer hub, within a derelict historic space for the Mill’s award-winning volunteers to use.

The transformed shop space is a treasure trove for budding bakers, cooking connoisseurs and wildlife enthusiasts with lots of unique and ethically sourced gift ideas on offer.

As well as funding important enhancements to the well-loved visitor attraction it also allowed important checks of the mill’s historic machinery, which has been working at full capacity throughout the pandemic, to take place.

The site includes a 60 acre reservoir, a haven for wildlife and regularly attracts birdwatchers and anglers.

Coun Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said: “Worsborugh Mill and Country Park is such an asset to the borough offering both a wonderful day out but also an important home to significant wildlife and habitats.

“It’s visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year and to have developments such as this, which will make it an even more special place to visit, is great to see.”
