Budget 2016: City of Culture and Tour de Yorkshire backed

THE BUDGET included cash to support Hull's City of Culture events next year and to promote the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race.

The cash for Hull is made up of £8 million towards the refurbishment of the Hull New Theatre ahead of City of Culture.

A further £5 million will help the organisers ensure that the city enjoys a longer term legacy from the events held next year.

Martin Green, chief executive of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, said: “This is a massive vote of confidence in Hull’s ability to deliver this national event and to secure a legacy that will change the city forever. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Chancellor, Lord Mandelson, Alan Johnson, Hull City Council and the team at the culture company who worked have collectively to deliver this.”

Regional tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire will receive £500,000 to support an international marketing campaign for Tour de Yorkshire 2016, the second running of the cycle race launched as the legacy of Yorkshire’s hosting of the Tour de France in 2014.

In Sheffield S1 Artspace will receive £1 million to help create a new arts complex in South Yorkshire.
