The Sheffield Hallam MP highlighted the work of Europol which works with police forces across EU states on areas such as organised crime and terrorism.

A report on radicalisation from MPs on the Commons Home Affairs Committee today recommended Britain should retain a “central position” in Europol after it leaves the EU.

Mr Clegg said: “Terrorism is not deterred by borders, and this report rightly highlights the critical work done by European agencies like Europol to ensure we can work with our EU partners to tackle it together.

“It is vital that the Government acts quickly to negotiate a continued relationship with these organisations as part of our new relationship with the EU, including access two-way information-sharing.

“The UK has provided counter-terrorism expertise to our EU partners over many years, and we would be deeply foolish to turn our back on programmes which are incredibly important to our national security.”

On a visit to Paris, London mayor Sadiq Khan said Britain’s capital would do all it could to support other cities which had suffered terror attacks.

He said: “London stands firmly with Paris in the aftermath of the horrendous attacks the city suffered. We will do everything we can to support Paris and all our European counterparts in the continued fight against extremism and those who wish to divide and harm us.”

Mr Khan promised London and Paris would retain close ties despite Britain leaving the EU.

Following the EU referendum result, I’m working to ensure London remains the best place in the world to do business and that we have the powers we need to protect jobs, wealth and prosperity.”
