York Nutcracker Trail: Christmas sculptures stolen and one thrown into the river by vandals

Two of the 10 sculptures on the York Nutcracker Trail have been stolen by vandals with one dumped in the River Foss, its organisers have confirmed.

York BID tweeted that two of the Christmas-themed statues had ‘gone missing’ and a third was inaccessible due to flooding.

The models were only installed last Thursday, when the festive family trail opened. Visitors who find all 10 in locations around the city and complete a form are entered into a prize draw.

The thefts were committed on Saturday, when the Merchantgate and Peasholme Green Nutcrackers were taken. One was later found in the river.

The incidents have been reported to police and the figures will be replaced.

The trail aims to show visitors around the whole city centre rather than merely the areas where the Christmas markets are located.

Participants are still able to complete the trail and enter the competition, York BID confirmed.
