Barnsley boss Michael Duff reacts to boos from away supporters after defeat in Morecambe

Barnsley boss Michael Duff admits the boos projected towards his players after Saturday’s defeat to Morecambe were justified.

Around 1700 fans travelled from South Yorkshire as the Tykes lost to a side who sat bottom of the table before kick off.

A first-half goal from Kieran Phillips proved the difference and earned Morecambe only their second win of the league season.

Duff was frustrated by the nature of the goal after the on-loan Huddersfield man scored from close range six minutes before the break after Barnsley had failed to clear their lines following a Ryan Cooney long throw.

However, the Tykes boss was keen to stress that his side had not conceded in their previous four away outings in League One.

“I thought they [the fans] were magnificent and they were entitled to boo at the end because the lads weren’t good enough,” said Duff.

"I will take the stick I got as well. We need to give them more than what we did today.

"I think there needs to be a bit of realism. It is the first goal we have conceded in five games away from home.

"It was a sloppy goal, they have not carved us open but on the other side we have to be better.”
