Gianni Alioski in plea for Chris Wood to stay loyal to Leeds United

Leeds matched up to Fulham in a high-tempo but goalless encounter on Tuesday, keeping head coach Thomas Christiansen’s unbeaten start intact and drawing a positive comparison with a team who beat them to a Championship play-off position last season.

The West Yorkshire club have undergone substantial change this summer and are still looking for further signings in the last fortnight of the transfer window but winger Alioski, who joined from Swiss club Lugano a month ago, said Leeds were already set to compete for a top-six finish.

Christiansen has gone four games without defeat despite the loss of several players to injury and Alioski said: “We have so many players in attack and good players with quality. We also have players who are at home (injured).

“We make chances and we are playing very well.

“I’d say we are good with this team and good with the players we have now.”

Leeds rejected a second bid from Burnley for striker Chris Wood ahead of Tuesday’s match, reiterating their insistence that Wood will not be sold this month.

Alioski is hoping to see the forward stay at Elland Road, saying: “He’s a good player. Last year he had 27 (league) goals and that’s not easy.

“I think also this year he will score the goals.

“We see that he always has chances to score and he will score.”

Middlesbrough’s victory over Burton Albion on Tuesday night was their second in four days – but new boss Garry Monk insists they are far from the finished article.

“We are playing in patches at the moment, but we look incredibly dangerous in those good patches,” said Monk.

“And we are also looking good defensively, giving opponents very few chances – which is good.

“We are striving for a complete performance, but it’s still early days. It’s nice to be winning when we are striving for that.

“It is still very early days for this group. I like to play aggressive football on the front foot and be good defensively. Striking that balance is a work in progress. But I’m happy with the result.”
