It was a St David’s Day to remember for Town as the Reds capitulated to Nahki Wells and the inspired hosts in a five-star show at the John Smith’s Stadium.

With Barnsley fan Dickie Bird and devout Town supporter Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale watching, the hosts produced an irresistible attacking display as they as they recorded their biggest home win in the league since walloping Wycombe 6-0 in November, 2009.

After a decent first half-hour, Barnsley inexplicably imploded with Wells leading them a merry dance, providing assists for four of the Terriers’ five goals.

The ex-Bradford City striker’s goal drought may have extended to seven matches, but that did not stop Town fans handing him a rapturous ovation when he was substituted just before the end.

Wells set up Keith Southern for the opener and then supplied Danny Ward for the second before laying on a further assist for current Reds winger Adam Hammill to bundle in a third.

Adam Clayton then scored from the spot after Wells had been fouled, before Sean Scannell rifled in a late fifth.

Huddersfield Town 2 Barnsley 2, May 4, 2013.

A rare love-in ensued between Town and Reds fans amid joyous scenes at the final whistle on Survival Saturday as both staved off the Championship drop amid hearty cries of ‘Yorkshire, Yorkshire.’

Pity poor Peterborough United with both sides effectively downing tools at the end - mindful of Posh losing at Crystal Palace - amid scenes that harked back to the famous Germany versus Austria ‘Anschluss’ game in the 1982 World Cup.

Chris O’Grady’s low shot had put Barnsley in front, only for Jermaine Beckford to equalise for the hosts.

Jason Scotland restored Barnsley’s lead but James Vaughan had the final word with an equaliser eight minutes from time.

Huddersfield Town 1 Barnsley 3, May 15, 2006.

Andy Ritchie’s Barnsley booked their place in the League One play-off final against Swansea City at the Millennium Stadium after earning a dramatic 3-2 aggregate victory, thanks to an unlikely 3-1 win.

Town led 1-0 from the first leg, but Paul Hayes levelled the tie for the Tykes from the penalty spot after Danny Schofield fouled him in the area.

Current Reds chief Paul Heckingbottom’s own goal restored the Terriers’ aggregate advantage, but Paul Reid’s header made it 2-2.

With 12 minutes left, Paul Rachubka spilled Brian Howard’s shot and Daniel Nardiello grabbed Barnsley’s winner.

Barnsley 7 Huddersfield Town 1, November 28, 1998.

The rampant Reds took Town to the cleaners in a rampant first-half Oakwell showing as Peter Jackson’s visitors fell apart.

The Town agony began on ten minutes when Bruce Dyer applied a simple finishing touch after the visiting defenders tried and failed to clear Darren Barnard’s corner.

Craig Hignett then claimed the first of his two quick-fire goals, glancing in Nicky Eaden’s cross before firing a crisp volley under the body of the embarrassed Nico Vaesen.

Eric Tinkler soon added a fourth from Barnard corner and four became five after 37 minutes, Ashley Ward racing through and rounding the goalkeeper to score his 15th of the season, a happy send-off before starting a three-match ban.

The coup de grace arrived when Barnard fired home a wonderful curling volley before Hignett had a chance to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot just after half-time, but the kick was ballooned into the crowd.

Dyer added his second of the night on 70 minutes, with Delroy Facey’s strike five minutes later representing scant consolation.

Huddersfield Town 1 Barnsley 0, February 7, 1981.

A huge seasonal-best attendance of 28,901 at Leeds Road saw Town see off their neighbours 1-0 to move up to third in the old Third Division.

Hero for Town was a South Yorkshireman in the shape of David Cowling, with the Doncaster-born player giving Mick Buxton’s side a hard-earned win with a goal in front of the old Cowshed End, with the Match of the Day cameras recording the events.

It gained a spot of revenge for Huddersfield, who lost 1-0 in the reverse fixture at Oakwell.

But the Reds had the last laugh and were promoted to the Second Division as runners-up to champions and Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United, with Town agonisingly finishing fourth to miss out on what would have been a splendid back-to-back promotion, with Charlton ensuring there was no White Rose one-two-three.
