VIDEO: Captain Morgan wants new contract after survival mission

The 29-year-old will be out of contract in the summer and other sides have been in touch with his representatives, but he is keen to resolve his Millers future and says he is not “asking for the world” to stay.

Morgan said: “In fairness, I have always been told that the club weren’t willing to do anything until they knew what division they were in. I have respected that.

“It’s left me in a situation where I feel like I have done well and clubs have made contact with my representatives, but I want to stay at Rotherham United. I will express my feelings during the week.

“The gaffer wants to sit down with me. I am not asking for the world. If it’s right, I want to be at Rotherham United. I feel like I fit here.

“I don’t always feel like moving is the best option. I have done that before and it hasn’t worked.

“I am settled here, I like what it’s about, I enjoy being captain.

“I am captain of the football club and I have always said if the offer in front of me is in keeping with the football club then I will happily sign it tomorrow.

“If it’s not and they want to go down a different road then I have to look at other opportunities because it is my last big contract that I am going to be able to earn, so I have to look after my family.”

The Millers are basking in the glow of securing their Championship future with a game to go and avoiding a climatic final-day trip to Leeds United, an achievement that Morgan ranks above back-to-back promotions.

The fact that the club have clinched safety, despite three points being deducted last Friday for playing ineligible Farrend Rawson, adds to the sense of accomplishment, with the players reacting to that blow in the best way possible.

Morgan said: “It’s important when you are a small club in a big league, you have to stay united and together.

“We felt hard done by the points (deduction) but if you break it down, we didn’t want it to be a blame game for anyone. An admin error has happened, we didn’t get told a lot about it, we didn’t want to know much about it.

“The bottom line is we had the points taken off, we’d like to make sure it never happens again. It could have made it tricky going into the last game of the season, we could have made excuses, but that’s not the group of players that we are.

“We had an idea; we’re footballers but we’re not that stupid. We looked at what has gone on; deep down we all knew. We spoke on Friday and said do what we have been doing and we shouldn’t have any issues.”

A few words of ‘encouragement’ arrived for the Millers in the build-up to Tuesday’s safety-clinching game with Reading, courtesy of Millwall forward Lee Gregory.

The Sheffielder revealed his hopes that the Royals would do a job on Rotherham and that the Millers would “bottle it” on the final day at Leeds, allowing the Lions to secure safety by winning at Wolves.

Manager Steve Evans fired a missive in Gregory’s direction after Tuesday’s game, saying: “Shut your trap, son.”

Morgan says he had no problems with Gregory’s quotes, adding: “I have got no qualms with Lee Gregory saying that.

“I am sure in a reverse position I would be saying the same thing.”
