Here are five of the most memorable episodes to jog the memory ahead of another seismic last day for Barnsley and Middlesbrough:

1: Brentford 0 Doncaster Rovers 1, April 28, 2013

Simply one of the most amazing finishes to a campaign in Football League history transpired for Brentford and Doncaster, with their seasons effectively boiling down to 18 madcap seconds in front of the Bees’ highest attendance for two decades at Griffin Park.

The winners-takes-all game in the quest for automatic promotion to the Championship looked destined to finish in a home victory after the Bees were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time after Jamie McCombe’s handball under pressure from Toumani Diagouraga.

With Rovers contemplating the play-offs, substitute Marcello Trotta, on loan from Fulham and not the Bees’ regular penalty taker - Kevin O’Connor was - picked up the ball and crashed his effort against the bar.

The considerable drama was not over – the loose ball breaking to Doncaster’s Billy Paynter, who moments earlier had sat down on the bench to get a drink and watch the penalty.

The unmarked striker ran towards goal before squaring to James Coppinger to tap into a gaping goal as Rovers secured promotion. Under 20 seconds earlier, they were contemplating the play-offs... Funny ol’game.

Survival Saturday saw a love-in ensue between Town and Reds fans amid joyous scenes at the final whistle as both staved off the Championship drop amid hearty cries of ‘Yorkshire, Yorkshire.’

Pity poor Peterborough United with both sides effectively downing tools at the end - mindful of Posh losing at Crystal Palace - amid scenes that harked back to the famous Germany versus Austria ‘Anschluss’ game in the 1982 World Cup.

Chris O’Grady’s low shot had put Barnsley in front, only for Jermaine Beckford to equalise for the hosts.

Jason Scotland restored Barnsley’s lead but James Vaughan had the final word with an equaliser eight minutes from time - on a day when both sides found themselves in the drop zone at certain junctures.

With two minutes of stoppage time to go in the final game of the league season, the Tigers were safely in the Premier League, leading 2-1 with Nick Proschwitz having the chance to well and truly confirm it from the penalty spot.

But the big German fluffed his lines - summing up his time at the KC Stadium - and at the other end moments later, Nicky Maynard showed how it should be done from the spot, firing home past David Stockdale after Abdoulaye Faye handled.

It was the cue to considerable late drama, with Hull’s automatic promotion rivals Watford now needing to win their game with Leeds – which still had some minutes to play due to severe injuries – to go up instead.

After the final whistle at the KC, events switched to Vicarage Road as Hull - who had led twice against Cardiff through goals from Proschwitz and Paul McShane - awaited developments.

Joyous news then filtered through that Ross McCormack had scored for Leeds - the cue for bedlam in East Yorkshire.

4: Rotherham United 2 Aldershot 0, May 4, 2013

The third humdinger of that seismic date for Yorkshire clubs three years ago saw Rotherham United secure promotion to the third tier - on a day which saw visiting Aldershot, managed by ex-Millers chief Andy Scott - relegated to the Conference.

A late strike from Lee Frecklington kicked off the Millers’ promotion party, with expectant home supporters in the bumper crowd having earlier been forced to witness a nervy final hour before captain Johnny Mullins fired the hosts in front on 64 minutes.

Jermaine Beckford performed like a man possessed in his farewell game at Elland Road to help provide United with a craved-for leaving present, firing the goal which clinched promotion back to the second tier.

Recalled as captain with Richard Naylor injured, Beckford - destined for a summer move to Everton - struck his 31st goal of the campaign in front of the Kop to seal victory in what was an at times tortuous game.

Leeds’ hopes were firmly in the balance after half an hour after Max Gradel was dismissed for clashing with Rovers’ Daniel Jones, with the United winger initially refusing to leave the pitch and having to be restrained by his team-mates as he angrily pursued the referee.

The situation was compounded just after the break when Darryl Duffy put Rovers in front.

But United dug deep with substitute Jonny Howson equalising with a stunning 20-yarder and Beckford pouncing not too long after - to the delight of the overwhelming majority of the huge 38,234 crowd.
