Wakefield Trinity v Sheffield Eagles - Michael Carter looks for Wildcats to avoid repeat show at Eagles

GIVEN his last experience against Sheffield Eagles, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats chairman Michael Carter is understandably wary of tonight's Ladbrokes Challenge Cup game.

Trinity may be in form in Super League, having won their last four games, but they will not under-estimate their visitors from the Championship.

When Wakefield played Eagles in the Qualifiers last term, they lost badly at Bramall Lane, a result which still holds painful memories for Carter.

“I was sat right next to our supporters that afternoon and I felt their wrath,” he recalled.

“It all kicked off for about 10 minutes after the match. It was certainly one of my lowest playing days since being here. Sheffield showed us they can turn us over; they beat us 24-10 and that probably flattered us a little bit.

“We’d certainly like to put that right. We’ll treat them with the utmost respect. Sheffield are a full-time outfit and they will be smarting after being pipped by Oldham on Sunday.”

Both clubs have had seen their fortunes change markedly since that day in September.

Wakefield, having survived the Million Pound Game to retain their Super League status, are now aiming for a top-eight spot.

Sheffield, who qualified for the Middle Eights having finished third in the Championship, have lost five of their last six games despite switching from part-time.

They could have prop Mitch Stringer and Dave Hewitt back tonight while Danny Kirmond, Nick Scruton, Reece Lyne, Jonny Molloy and Scott Moore drop out for Wakefield. Instead, Chris Annakin, Jason Walton, Andy Yates and Craig Hall get a chance as does Scott Anderson after injury.
