Fashion retailer Joe Browns hails strongest year to date as sales and profits rise

Fashion and homes retailer Joe Browns is celebrating its strongest year to date with sales and profit up 20.9 per cent and 4.1 per cent respectively.

The Leeds-based firm’s latest annual accounts, filed at Companies House, show that during the year to June 30, 2022, turnover reached £47.3m, up from £39.1m the year before. Pre-tax profit was £5.1m, up from £4.9m the previous year.

The directors said the increase in turnover followed an additional £2.9m in marketing expenditure as the company invested to recruit new customers and keep its existing clients engaged.

The continuing recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic also helped to increase sales, particularly in the retail stores, which saw a full year of trading after the previous financial year’s mandated shutdowns, they said.

During the year, Joe Browns appointed a chief executive, Peter Alecock, a first for the company.

In addition, it also recently announced that it would be searching for sites for 10 stores across the UK. Initial discussions on a number of locations, following the announcement, were progressing well.

A separate franchise store, a first for the retailer, will open in Bowness-on-Windemere, Cumbria in late spring this year.

Meanwhile, the company’s £2m warehouse upgrade has started, with work due to be completed by July 2023.

Mr Alecock said: “We are really pleased with both sales and profits to the year ending June 22. It’s testament to the amazing team we have here at Joe Browns across every area of the business and I wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone involved.

“We expect the external trading environment to remain challenging. As such creating stand-out, remarkable product has always been central to the Joe Browns business and this ethos has never been more important than today.”
