Mission to strengthen business and education links

FORMER CBI Director General Lord Digby Jones will visit East Yorkshire this month to encourage more children to become entrepreneurs.

Lord Jones will meet with Hull’s head teachers, entrepreneurs and local authority education partners to talk about the importance of forging links between business and academia. The trip on Wednesday, June 8 has been organised by Newland School for Girls in partnership with World Trade Centre Hull & Humber and the translation and interpreting company, Language is Everything.

Lord Jones was invited to Hull by Angela Martinson, head of Newland School for Girls, who believes that such partnerships are key to creating new opportunities and prosperity. She said: “Traditional routes into the workplace have fragmented and evolved, and the competition for jobs is extremely tough. I believe it is crucial that we expose our students to the huge range of possibilities in the world of work.

“In addition, it is only through collaboration that education leaders can really tune into the qualities and skills that are required by businesses.

“We are very pleased that Lord Jones has agreed to take part in this unique event as his profile will really assist us in highlighting the issues, and his invaluable experience and knowledge of industry will really add weight to the debate.”

Carolyn Burgess, director of World Trade Centre Hull & Humber and chief executive of Language is Everything, said: “We are living in a globalised economy, and this region is fantastically placed to make the most of international business development.

“We need our young people to be outward looking and we can only achieve this by working together.”

Lord Jones is touring the UK to promote his new book, Fixing Britain: The Business of Reshaping Our Nation. On his website, he states: “The entire planet is our market. Britain was built for globalisation; we are an open business society who make good traders, from Beijing to Bangalore, from Birmingham to Baltimore.”

Lord Jones has also lobbied against protectionism protesting that “it is a scourge which may well find short term popularity but inhibits growth, reduces wealth and oppresses the weak”.

He is due to arrive at the World Trade Centre Hull & Humber at 12 noon on June 8.
