A fish and chip shop plans to celebrate its roots this Yorkshire Day by offering free and discounted meals to customers who dress in a traditional style.

Hillside Fisheries, known to locals as ‘Charlie’s Chippy’, has offered to provide fish and chips free of charge to all customers who visit the chippy on August 1 wearing a flat cap and accompanied by their pet whippet.

Customers who don’t own a pet whippet but still visit wearing a flat cap will also benefit from a 10 per cent discount on their total order at the chip shop, which is based in Ackworth, near Pontefract,

A spokesman said: "The promotion has been developed to raise spirits within the community following three months of uncertainty for residents as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and to celebrate the great traditional fish and chips of Yorkshire."

The owner of Hillside Fisheries, Charlie Tipton said: “The village of Ackworth was affected by the pandemic, and as a close-knit community, it was really unnerving for us to witness.

“We wanted to do something that would raise our customers’ spirits and Yorkshire Day seemed like the perfect opportunity given that customers know us to be fun, outgoing Yorkshire people.

“The whippet and flat cap look is a really old stereotype, but we thought it would lift residents’ spirits to see customers in the village sporting that look.”

The business first opened as Hillside Fisheries in the 1960s before closing due to a fire and reopening as Charlie’s Chippy in 2017.

Mr Tipton added: “We cook our fish and chips in the traditional way using the finest ingredients available to us."

Those wishing to take advantage of the offer on Yorkshire Day are asked to queue outside two metres apart before ordering at the door and entering one at a time to pay.

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
