The Premier League and the Football League met with the players' union on Friday to discuss the coronavirus pandemic, and have agreed to work together as they look to formulate a joint plan of action next week.

The leagues have concerns about the financial impact on their clubs of the suspension of matches, which will last until April 30 on the earliest. A new, later, date could be proposed next week.

The union has a duty to protect its members, with some worried about wage deferrals and the prospect of playing games behind closed doors.

The three bodies are bracing themselves for “ difficult decisions”, but after the meeting they agreed “to work together to arrive at shared solutions.”

A joint statement on behalf of the organisations said: “Further meetings will take place next week with a view to formulating a joint plan to deal with the difficult circumstances facing the leagues, their clubs, players, staff and fans.”
