Fears for future of Goole Hospital after staff told it could be "cut in half"

An NHS trust says it is considering "future potential options and opportunities" for Goole hospital.

It comes after nearly 6,000 people signed a petition claiming plans are afoot to close the hospital “as a 24/7 service for outpatients only”.

A member of staff said she was at a meeting on Friday, which was addressed by Jonathan Lofthouse, Group Chief Executive at Hull University Teaching Hospitals trust and Northern Lincolnshire and Goole trust (NLaG).

She said: “The hospital’s in a U-shape and they told us they were going to cut it in half and look at potential investors or knock it down. The other side would be for outpatients only.

“Opthamology would stay but the birthing unit would close and the brain injury unit move to Castle Hill Hospital (near Hull).

“We were obviously utterly shocked. He went on to talk about redeployment. We said a lot don’t drive and he said they’d provide transport for two years. We are very unhappy that they are gaslighting us.”

Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG), which also runs hospitals in Scunthorpe and Grimsby, said no decisions had been made.

The purpose-built hospital, which opened in 1988, has a brain injury rehabilitation unit, an urgent treatment centre and several wards, including surgery and critical care.

It also has a small standalone birthing unit. In a statement NLAG said: “There is a lot of disinformation circulating about Goole and District Hospital, which is causing unnecessary anxiety for the local population and our staff

“We have started work to look at the future potential options and opportunities for the hospital. No decisions have been taken on the future of the hospital.

“There is a lot of work we have to do with our staff, patients and partners to understand what we might do and we will be meeting with them to discuss potential options and their ideas in the coming months.”
