Famous off-grid farmhouse at the foot of Ingleborough is for sale

One of the most sought-after homes in Yorkshire right now is not a million pound plus house with the latest mod cons and luxurious interiors. It is the charmingly named Crina Bottom just outside the village of Ingleton, which is now for sale and attracting thousands of views online thanks to its glorious location at the foot of Ingleborough.

The rustic 17th century farmhouse, which is on the market for offers over £425,000 with the Neil Wright estate agency, boasts splendid views of Yorkshire’s second highest mountain and the surrounding countryside. “Crina Bottom is a very special property and while we expected interest, it is far in excess of what we imagined,” says Neil Wright.

By virtue of its position nestled beneath one of Yorkshire’s famous Three Peaks, it is one of the Dales most photographed properties and features on everything from paintings and postcards to souvenir tea towels and mugs.

The working range with its roaring fire and the fact that the property is run entirely off-grid via a wind turbine, LPG and water off the fell have also appealed to would-be buyers who dream of escaping to the country. While vehicular access is by 4X4, on foot or by bicycle up a mile-and-a-half long bridleway, the track leads straight from Ingleton and all its amenities. Plus, a Shogun four-wheel drive is included in the sale. Isolation is not an issue either as walkers regularly pass by on the well-worn route from Ingleton to Ingleborough’s summit.

Owners Louise and David Plowright moved to Crina Bottom from the Wirral 22 years ago as they embarked on their own escape to the country and they are selling to downsize with heavy hearts. “We came here because we wanted to move to the country and this appealed because of the views and the fact it was a bit different,” says Louise.

The couple and the children they raised there have enjoyed the benefits of rural living and being off-grid. After getting the keys to a new life, the Plowrights renovated the four-bedroom farmhouse and updated the energy-generating equipment. LPG runs the heating system and the Rayburn and a wind turbine means that three quarters of their electricity now comes from wind power and a quarter from a diesel generator.

“When we first moved up here and relied completely on a generator we used to get a lot of walkers knocking on the door for help when the clouds came down on Ingleborough. They used to follow the sound of the generator.

“I’m not sure whether it’s the wind turbine, which doesn’t make a loud noise, or the fact people have mobile phones, but that happens less frequently now,” says Louise, who loves to light a real fire in the old cast iron range, which she has also used for cooking.

The couple say that living through lockdown has been eased by being at Crina Bottom and Louise adds: “It is the most wonderful, calming and peaceful place to be. We have been so happy here and in lockdown it felt very safe. We felt privileged to be in such a beautiful spot with so much open space.”

To make the most of the incredible views, Louise has put a decked area in the garden that faces towards Ingleborough and catches the sun. When the walkers are gone, which they generally are after 4pm, she likes to sit there with a glass of wine and have that view all to herself.
