Dating from the 1600s, it is full of character and characters and is what many regard as a “proper country pub”. Kettlewell with its village shop, pubs and garage is 6.5 miles away and Hawes with a host of shops, is an eight mile drive.

Laurence Beardmore and his wife bought the Grade II listed cottage six years ago. They enjoyed walking in the Dales and were looking for a home where they could retreat to.

“We knew the valley because we came across it 25 years ago when walking up here,” says Laurence. "It was one of our favourite places and so when this cottage came for sale we bought it.

“It dates to 1630 and it looks like a typical early longhouse butting onto earth at the back. It is very well built. The walls are two-and-a-half feet thick and it has mullion windows.”

Saying goodbye to the cottage and the Dale will be hard but the couple are taking many happy memories with them. “We have enjoyed the cottage very much. The views are lovely and when you drive up there, you get this feeling of happiness but I am retiring and that’s why we are selling,” says Laurence.
