For sale: this converted cattle shed is now a first class home and the epitome of industrial chic

For many, the thought of buying a former farm building that was just four walls and a new roof would fill them with dread but for a minority it would scream “dream project” and so it was for Jane, who managed to persuade her husband that The Cattle Shed in the village of Todwick was a must have.

The fact it was connected to the mains was a bonus, she reasoned, and it offered an escape to the country.

Another great benefit was that they were able to design the layout inside to suit their lifestyle. As for the decor, Jane, who has a great sense of style, knew exactly what was required and the result is sensational.

“I wanted an industrial look that mixed new items with reclaimed pieces and quirky elements,” she says.

Hunting for them was enjoyable and while the couple invested heavily in some elements, including the stylish Odin wood-burning stove with a backdrop of brick slips and the furniture, much of which is from Barker and Stonehouse, other pieces include great finds.

The industrial lights were found by the side of a skip and are now hung from the sitting area ceiling.

“I asked the workmen on the site if I could take them and they said ‘yes’ and I took them home and sprayed them and I’m really pleased at how they turned out,” says Jane.

She also came up with the idea of using reclaimed, rusted corrugated metal sheets to create a feature wall in the hall, upon which she hung some cow horns from a friend’s mother’s farm.

The flooring is wood throughout and the new kitchen is simple and stylish and the contrast of the rustic tiles works brilliantly.

“The tiles are from Nick Firth Tiles in Sheffield, he has some great industrial pieces,” says Jane, who is now selling to downsize.

The property, which is on the market with Blenheim Park Estates for £675,000, has a welcoming entrance hall featuring a double-height ceiling and the reclaimed corrugated metal panelled wall.

Jane says: “We have enjoyed living here. It’s a quiet village surrounded by countryside and there are some really lovely walks plus we are not far from the canal.”

There is also a local park nearby and Rother Valley Country Park is close by.
