Historic home with coach house for sale in idyllic hamlet near Beverley

Happy memories and the way a house feels rarely feature in property brochures and perhaps for good reason as you can’t prove their veracity in the way you can with square footage, location and the number of rooms a property has.

Yet, to know a home has been loved and enjoyed and that its atmosphere is friendly would be a comfort for many would-be buyers.

A chat with the owners of Thearne Hall confirms that it ticks those boxes.

Suzi Spink and her brother have very fond memories of growing up at the hall, which is in a quiet rural hamlet close to Beverley.

“My parents bought it in 1973 and there is a lovely story behind it because they went on holiday and left my grandmother in charge of bidding for the hall at auction,” says Suzi.

“She was given a strict budget and when they got back from holiday, they asked how much the hall went for and granny told them it was more than the price they had been able to go to but she had put in the extra money needed and won the bidding. Mum burst into tears.”

The property, constructed around 1850, was in need of renovation and over the years it was restored into a beautiful family home.

“There were piglets living in the bookcase in the lounge when my parents bought it,” says Suzi. “They did a lot of work on restoring the house and the garden.”

The separate coach house was initially used as a stable for ponies with a games room upstairs but was later converted into a dwelling.

“My brother and I enjoyed growing up at Thearne Hall. The atmosphere in the house is really calming, which I appreciated when I moved to London and came home to visit,” says Suzi.

“It will be really sad to see it go but it will be good to see it lived in and loved again and it does lend itself to modern day living.”
