Car 'linked to illegal encampment' winched back up cliffs after being dumped onto beach at Withernsea

A car linked to an “illegal encampment” which was dumped over the clifftops onto the beach at Withernsea has been recovered.

East Riding Council said the Peugot 107, near Waxholme Road, was recovered on Saturday following concerns over safety and the impact on the environment.

The council said the car wasn’t originally on their land, but “originated from private land at the top of the cliff”.

They said they called in contractors after carrying out an assessment as the car fell further down the cliff.

The council said they were currently unable to trace the owner of the vehicle.

They said it is believed to be linked to an illegal encampment, which had been at the top of the cliff.

Councillor Paul West, the council’s cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “We arranged for our contractors to remove the vehicle from the cliff on Saturday.

“As much debris from the car was removed as possible, but we urge people to be cautious around the area where the vehicle was, in case of broken glass and other objects.

“Warning signs have been placed at the site.”
