Over half of UK households take festive decorating inspiration from classic Christmas films, with The Holiday and Home Alone proving the nation's biggest influences, according to new research.

More than half of Britons take inspiration from Christmas films and television shows when decorating their homes for the festive season, new research suggests. A survey commissioned by lighting retailer Lights4fun found that 51.9 per cent of people look to festive favourites for décor ideas, with many seeking to recreate the nostalgic atmosphere associated with seasonal classics.

According to the research, nearly half (49.1 per cent) of respondents said they decorate their homes to recapture the magic of childhood Christmas viewing traditions.

The findings revealed a divide between two leading festive styles, with cosy countryside-inspired interiors proving almost as popular as more traditional and colourful displays.

The Holiday topped the list of cinematic influences, cited by 22.2 per cent of respondents, followed closely by Home Alone on 21.6 per cent.

Other popular sources of inspiration included Love Actually (14.2 per cent), Elf (10.1 per cent) and The Polar Express (9.9 per cent).

The study also found that warm-white lighting remains the most popular choice for outdoor displays, favoured by 47.2 per cent of households. However, retro multi-coloured lights are making a comeback, chosen by 39 per cent of respondents. Lights4fun said online search trends reflect the shift, with growing interest in retro festive decorations and cottagecore-inspired Christmas styling.

The research also found that 48.2% of households plan to decorate during the first weekend of December.

Claire Bassett of Lights4fun said: "If you prefer the nostalgic energy of Home Alone, embrace classic Christmas outdoor lights such as connectable festoons and vibrant multi-coloured bulbs along rooflines. The secret is layering soft ambient lighting indoors with striking, cheerful statements outside."
